DIARY OF THE VISIT TO TERNI, ITALY

13-18.02.2011

All teams arrived in Terni on 13th February. Luckily, the weather in Italy was warmer than the weather in the other countries. Our Italian colleagues had organized dinner at a nice place with jazz performances. We were all glad to see each other again and to meet some new colleagues.

The 14th February was a special day for Terni – the holiday of the town whose patron is St. Valentine. We had the chance to feel the atmosphere in the main streets with all those stalls selling chocolates, the music and friendly people. During the day we visited some really interesting sites – The Marmore waterfalls, the ruins of an old Roman city near Carsulae, the amphitheatre in Terni and the Museum of modern art called Chaos.

On 15th  February we visited Licei Statali LinguisticoMusicale - Scienze Umane“F. Angeloni”.  Our colleagues showed us the school – the library, the computer rooms, the language lab, the staff room, the headmaster’s office.

Our meeting was officially opened by the performance of the young musicians from the Italian school.

We had our first working session in the morning. The agenda included several topics:

-         Resume of the activities done so far

-         Managing and updating of our project site

-         Deciding on some deadlines for uploading our products on the website

-         Ideas on how to develop friendship between our students. (efficient use of email and forum page)

All teams presented their results of the questionnaire concerning xenophobia which had been done among students in our schools. It became clear that our teenagers respect the other nationalities and races and would like to get to know their foreign peers better. Later the results of all school will be generalized by the Latvian team.

At noon we were greeted by the authorities at Provincia di Terni.

In the afternoon we continued our session with presentations of typical dishes from our national cuisines. Several films were shown of how to prepare a particular meal.

On 16th  February we all had the chance to see some of the landmarks in Rome. We visited St. Peter’s cathedral in the Vatican, Navona square, The Trevi fountains, Republic square, the Pantheon, The Colosseum. Some of us added a new accssesory to our outfit as we bought an umbrella from the street sellers. Despite the heavy rain we all enjoyed our time there. Of course, we did not miss to taste Italian coffee and cappuccino being safe from the rain for a while.

On 17th February we continued our work. The agenda included:

·        Finding out new ideas /reasons and ways to defeat xenophobia/

·        Discussing the programme of activities for the students’ meeting in Lithuania.

·        Preparing a questionnaire for the evaluation of the Project Process

·        Discussing the topics of the third meeting.

The Latvian team suggested a new questionnaire about the family values and Christina /Italy/ proposed a study of the teenagers’ body language.

As far as the activities until the next meeting are concerned we decided  the following:

-         To send to each other a proverb concerning peace and translate all proverbs in our native languages – until the end of February

-         To upload on our website a short biography of an author in the field of peace and a part of a work – until the end of March

Our main topic for the meeting in Lithuania is Games so we decided to prepare and demonstrate a traditional children’s game there.

We also discussed the organization of the next meeting – travelling, students, workshops.

In the afternoon we went to the old town of Orvieto situated on a steep hill.  We were fascinated by the rich frescos of the cathedral. We also had the chance to enrich our knowledge about the life of the ancient Etruscan  while visiting the archeological museum there.

In the evening we enjoyed an Italian meal in a cosy pizzeria in Terni and said goodbye to each other.

On Friday morning all of us left for Rome airport for our flights back home.
